Guillaume Mondron leaves Zandvoort with comfortable points lead

Delahaye Racing’s Guillaume Mondron leaves Zandvoort with a 47-point lead in the drivers’ championship over his own co-driver and team-mate Giacomo Altoè, after the #4 Volkswagen team took three podiums including a win in the weekend’s five races.

Mondron, switching from the #5 SEAT to join Altoè in the #4 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR this weekend, won the qualifying long race on Saturday with Altoè, with both drivers’ best laps putting them on the front row for Races 1 and 3 on Sunday.

16-year-old Altoe finished second in Race 1, following that up with a win in Race 2, while 23-year-old Mondron just lost out on a podium in Race 3, while lucky positioning in Race 4 saw him just avoid the Honda of Tom Coronel crash ahead of him and crossed the line fifth.

“I’m so glad to be here without any damage on the car, I was just in the right place at the right moment,” said Mondron to TouringCarTimes.

“In the first race, I was struggling with my tyres, which I think were overheating. Aurélien Comte (Peugeot) overtook me at the chicane, off the track a bit, I retried to overtake him at the first corner but couldn’t.

“The second race was not bad. I had a very bad start, but the race was cool. I was fighting with Maxime Potty in the Volkswagen and Pepe Oriola (SEAT), overall it’s been a good weekend in the championship, I’ve quite a nice lead.

Mondron has 159 points after ten races, with Altoe 47 points behind in second, with Honda’s Benjamin Lessennes in third with 110.
