Michel Nykjaer wins race 2 and ETC title

Danish Champion Michel Nikjaer has claimed the overall win in the European Touring Car Cup, after winning the second race of the day. The Dane, who drove for the GR Asia team for this occasion, scored the most points of all drivers after both races, as he had already claimed second place in the first race. The Danish National Sporting Authority DASU has won the Nations trophy, which has been awarded for the first time at this third edition of the European Touring Car Cup.

The second race of the day at Adria was less agressive as the first race. The Dane Kristian Poulsen got best of the line and took the lead into the first corner. 17 year old Charlie Geipell, who started from pole, dropped down the field immediately. Russian Alexander Lvov soon took second position, but eventually had to give way to Michel Nykjaer.

This meant that Tomas Engström, who won the first race and therefor started 8th in the second race, had to finish on the podium to stay ahead of Nykjaer in the overall standings. However, after Nykjaer had closed down the gap of 2.5 seconds to the leader, Kristian Poulsen made a mistake halfway through the race, allowing Nykjaer to take over the lead. Engström did manage to overtake some more drivers, but in the end he finished in fourth, which was not enough to claim the title.

The organisers of the race seemed to have hired Pelé to finish off the race, because after 19 lap there was no flag. Kristian Poulsen didn’t notice this and stopped racing. Pontus Morth took advantage of this and overtook Poulsen. The field continued racing for another lap, and after 20 laps the finish flag was finally out. The organisers of the race soon found out they had made a mistake and used the results of the race after 19 laps, giving back Poulsen his second place.

Michel Nykjaer, who had the advantage that his team GR Asia has a lot of experience with the Yokohama tires, claimed the title with 18 points. Runner up was Sweden’s Tomas Engström, scoring 15 points. Kristian Poulsen took third with 11 points.

In the Super Productions class, Alexander Basov claimed the overall victory, after he had won both races. Jens-Guido Weimann did the same in the S1600 class.
