Göransson is fastest and crashes

The Swede Richard Göransson ended the final test session of the day at Salzburgring and the 2008 FIA European Touring Car Cup. Göransson lapped the track in 1:28.702 before he managed to put his car in to the barriers only a few minutes before the end.
“The car is really good, unfortunately I got out of line and went in to the barriers on my first run on new tyres. But we have a very good base for tomorrow,” said Göransson.

The car suffered damage to the rear left suspension of the car, but the team reports it will be ready tomorrow.

Top three was really close in this session. Reigning ETC Cup champion Michel Nykjær was second fastest, only 0.032 seconds behind, and Franz Engstler was third fastest, 0.050 seconds behind Göransson.

Göransson’s team mate Jan Nilsson was fourth fastest, 0.124 seconds behind, and Kristian Poulsen made it four BMW’s in the top five.

Oscar Nogues was back after his earlier engine problems and was sixth fastest ahead of Cesar Campanico and Mikko Eskelinen. Swedish Honda-driver Tomas Engström was ninth fastest ahead of his manufacturer-colleauge Jens Reno Møller.

Nine cars were within one second around the 4.255 kilometer long Austrian track.
