Thompson wins the 2009 ETC Cup

James Thompson put on a storming drive to go from 11th to 1st in the second ETC Cup race – and secures the ETC Cup on his first attempt.

Franz Engstler finished in second place to tie on points, but Thompson’s win gives him the tie breaker and the title.

Michael Nykjaer was an early casualty, as chaos reigned at the start.

Duarte Félix Da Costa’s Bamboo Engineering Chevrolet led early on, but fell back with a puncture, giving the race lead to team mate Harry Vaulkhard who had passed Franz Engstler for second.

When Thompson worked his way past the German, for a moment, Vaulkhard was looking set for the title, but under presure from Thompson, slid off wide and gave Thompson the lead and the chance for the title.

Race one winner Norbert Michelisz didn’t show the same pace on the drier circuit and in traffic as he did this morning, and finished back in 5th place and is only awarded third place overall.
