Points for pole in 2011 ETCC

The 2011 European Touring Car Cup has seen points added for the top three cars in qualifying in an adjustment at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council today.

In qualifying the top three cars will score points towards the standings, with the pole-sitter scoring three points, second place two and third position picking up a single point.

If applied to the 2010 championship, James Thompson would have won the ETC Cup by nine points over Michel Nykjaer instead of just four on account of Thompson’s hat-trick of poles in all three rounds this year.

There would have been no notable change in positions except Kristian Poulsen would have tied with César Campaniço in sixth place.

No other changes to the points system were made which means the ETC Cup will still use the 2003-2009 Formula 1 ‘top eight’ scoring system with 10 points for the race winner down to one point for eighth.
