Fernando Monje takes pole at Monza for SUNRED

Fernando Monje has secured pole position for the first round of the 2012 FIA European Touring Car Cup at Monza ahead of Czech driver Petr Fulín’s BMW.

Monje’s best lap of 2:01.188 was just over a second faster than Fulín, with Monje driving the only diesel powered car in the field.

Stian Paulsen was third fastest overall and the top placed in the SEAT Supercopa class, just ahead of Andreas Pfister.

Reigning Super Production class champion Aleksander Tosic secured pole for Super Production, with Kevin Krammes for Team Ravenol GENA securing class pole in the eight-strong S1600 class ahead of Gilles Bruckner and Ulrike Krafft.

“I want to thank the team, they did a great job, it was also a great lap, I pushed hard and that’s the result,” said Monje.

“I think we have to maintain the tyres…but I think we just have to keep the pace and it should be okay.”
