Battle resumes at Pergusa for the European Touring Car Cup

After a two month break, the 2013 FIA European Touring Car Cup resumes this weekend at the Pergusa circuit in Sicily, Italy, with the fight for the Super 2000 title having closed right back up after the Salzburgring.

The ETCC now splits from its supporting slot with the World Touring Car Championship and goes it alone for its last two races, this weekend at Pergusa and then with the season finale at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic, current S2000 points leader Petr Fulín’s home race.

Krenek Motorsport’s Petr Fulín still leads the standings, but after a disastrous weekend at the Salzburgring where he was eliminated in the first race in a four car collision involving Tuenti Racing’s Jordi Oriola, Pfister Racing’s Andreas Pfister and NIS Petrol Racing Team’s Dušan Borković, and then unable to start race two, Fulín’s lead was slashed to just four points ahead of 18-year-old Slovakian driver Mat’o Homola.

The BMW 320sis of both drivers may find some additional interference this weekend. Although having been the class of the S2000 grid after the turbo-diesel SEAT engine was outlawed for 2013, Dušan Borković will become the first driver to enter a Chevrolet Cruze in this year’s ETCC, bringing a 2009 WTCC-specificaiton Cruze LT to replace his damaged SEAT León TFSI, which with the seven year old normally aspirated SEAT engine has proven to be uncompetitive this season.

In the Single-Make Trophy, after his home win last time out at Austria, Mario Dablander leads the standings by just three points over Jordi Oriola, who unlike his older brother Pepe in the WTCC, won’t have the option of switching cars mid-season given he’s competing in the class which is effectively for SEAT León Supercopa cars only.

In Super 1600, Ravenol Team GENA’s Kevin Krammes maintains a healthy 31 point lead over Gilles Bruckner and is on target for his second consecutive S1600 class title.

As a result of his success in Austria, Mat’o Homola’s BMW 320si will be carrying the maximum success ballast of 50kg, just 5kg more than Krenek Motorsport’s Petr Fulín.

Testing and qualifying take place on Saturday with the two races run as a double header from 11:20 CET on Sunday 14th July.
