Race 1 abandoned at the Slovakiaring after crash for Griessner
The first race of the day at the Slovakiaring has been abandoned after heavy damage to David Griessner’s ETH Tuning Peugeot as well as the barriers at the circuit.
Johannes Leidinger had driven away from pole in his Liqui Moly Team Engstler BMW ahead of title rival Jens Weimann’s Thate Motorsport BMW and were set for one of their traditional race long duels.
In Division 2, Austrian driver David Griessner, who could secure the Division 2 class title for Super 1600 cars in this race after a ten race winning streak, made a mistake on lap three in his ETH Tuning Peugeot 207 Sport, crashing out heavily at Turn 2, putting his left-rear wheel in the gravel on the exit, which spun him sharply across the track and hard into the barrier, with the car bouncing across the track sustaining heavy damage.
Griessner walked away from the car unaided, slamming the door in frustration and was checked by the medical team by the side of the track.
Unfortunately for the Troisdorf-based ETH Tuning team, Griessner’s team-mate Andreas Rinke collected debris from the crash as the pack came through, and broke his front-right suspension, pulling off to the side of the track.
There was a lengthy red flag period as the car of Griessner required recovery, as well as repairs to the barrier were carried on the inside of the corner, with the officials finally making the call to abort the race after just three laps.
The result was declared with the positions at the end of lap two used, but because just two laps were completed the result will not count for points in the championship.
