2013 ADAC Procar title to be decided by court of appeal
Jens Weimann has been provisionally crowned the champion of the 2013 ADAC Procar Series Division 1 class, but will have to wait for this to be officially confirmed, with Liqui Moly Team Engstler appealing the exclusion of Johannes Leidinger from both races at the Hockenheim finale.
Weimann looked favourite to wrap up the title with just four cars running in the Division 1 class for Super 2000 cars at the season finale at Hockenheim last weekend, with only a retirement able to stop the Thate Motorsport driver from defending his title.
Controversially, that’s exactly what happened when Weimann had only his second DNF of the season, after Leidinger made contact with the rear of Weimann’s BMW on the seventh lap of the race. Weimann’s BMW 320si was knocked off the circuit and into the barriers, sustaining heavy rear-end damage and into retirement, with the car unable to be repaired to make the second race.
Leidinger went on to finish in third place in race one and then to win the second race of the day, seemingly securing his second drivers’ title after winning the 2011 championship, but he was later excluded from both races by the stewards, which therefore sees Weimann crowned the champion on 106 points to Leidinger’s 92.
Liqui Moly Team Engstler have decided to appeal against Leidinger’s exclusion from the two races, and so the title will be decided in the court of appeal when Leidinger’s exclusion is either confirmed or the team’s appeal is upheld.
