Petr Fulín: “Every point will be important”

Petr Fulín leaves Slovakia with the joint-lead of the closely contested European Touring Car Cup’s Single-Make Trophy class after winning his first race of the season at the circuit. With third in race two, the Czech driver is now tied with Serbia’s Dusan Borkovic for the points lead, and says that this season will be extremely close.

In race one, Fulín converted pole position into a race one victory despite Borkovic leading the way throughout practice. In race two, the Krenek Motorsport driver had to recover from an early off to fight his way back to the final spot on the class podium behind Dusan Borkovic and Mat’o Homola.

“It was very difficult, maybe it looked easy, but during free practice and the testing sessions we had a lot of problems with set-up,” said Fulín. “We were successful in qualifying, the first race was not easy but I pushed really hard at the start and then controlled my position.

“In race two, we changed a few things and we also were on used tyres. I had a bit of an understeering car especially at the beginning. I made a mistake while trying to overtake Mat’o (Homola) when I chose the outside line, which is why I went across the grass.”

Now jointly leading the class, after Ferenc Ficza relinquished his joint-lead after a terrible weekend with two DNFs in the Zengo Motorsport SEAT, the Czech driver stressed how important consistency will be in the ETCC’s top tier and closest class.

“If you imagine eight drivers in the Single-Make Trophy, with 3-4 very strong drivers you need constant results all season, so you need every point all season and you need no mistakes or accidents.”
