Guillaume Mondron fears title lead will be gone after Race 4

Delahaye Racing driver Guillaume Mondron expects to lose his lead of the TCR Benelux series drivers’ standings when he leaves Zolder, with Honda’s Benjamin Lessennes and Tom Coronel having dominated proceedings so far this weekend.

Mondron has a slender two-point margin over Lessennes after the second sprint race, but with Coronel and Lessennes having scored the maximum 75 points possible after the first three races, the 23-year-old expects to be trailing Lessennes after the final race of the day.

“The success ballast has made things very complicated, I was fighting with Stefano (Comini) in the second race and couldn’t do anything,” explained Mondron, whose car is carrying 20kg on top of the TCR Balance of Performance weight this weekend.

“I began to have understeer after just 15 minutes, and I also didn’t have a very good start, but that’s my fault. We haven’t found a good set-up, and it’s not a good track for the SEAT, but at least the next time we won’t have the success ballast,” he added.

Guillaume’s brother Edouard is back on duty this weekend and will drive the car in the last two sprint races, but title rival Lessennes starts on pole position for Race 3 after setting the fastest lap in the qualifying race yesterday.

“I think that Benjamin will be fast, so at the end of the weekend he’s going to be the leader,” said Mondron.

The Mondron brothers aren’t committed to taking part in the next race in July, which is again at Zolder, and are due back for the penultimate weekend at Mettet.
