Nürburgring races cancelled following tyre safety concerns

The FIA World Touring Car Cup races at the Nürburgring Nordschleife have been cancelled due to concerns over tyre safety.

The WTCR teams met with officials from the FIA, promoters Discovery Sports Events and official tyre supplier Goodyear on Saturday morning prior to the announcement of the decision.

The announcement from the WTCR organisation read:

Race 1 and Race 2 WTCR Race of Germany, scheduled as rounds three and four of the 2022 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup, will not take place for safety reasons.

The decision was confirmed less than one hour before opening race of the weekend was due to get underway.

Several teams have suffered vibrations, punctures and delaminations throughout the practice and qualifying sessions, with Goodyear issuing a statement yesterday that the issues were isolated to the customer teams of Honda and Lynk & Co.
