Jan Magnussen is Danish champion!
Jan Magnussen is the new champion of the 2008 Danish Touring Car Championship. The Dane ended the season at Jyllandsringen in the best way possible by winning the final race ahead of Michel Nykjær and Emmet O’Brien. Magnussen’s final score in the championship is 314 points. Henrik Lundgaard finished second with 271 points and Michael Outzen third, both driving for the Chevrolet-team.
Magnussen won the first qualifying heat, finished sixth in the second qualifying heat and was untouchable in the final race.
“We had the speed to take the title, so everything went according to plan. We have been fastest at Jyllandsringen. Previously we have not been running strong here, but this year we have. It is a fantastic day with my son Kevin winning the Formula Ford championship and me taking the DTC title,” said Magnussen.
Magnussen’s main rivals for the title, Lundgaard and Outzen, simply did not score enough points to be able to fight with Magnussen in the final race of the weekend and of the 2088-season.
Lundgaard finished second in the first qualifying heat, but suffered from suspension problems in the second race.
“Suddenly my chance of winning the championship was gone. After the first corner of the second heat a competitor thought that I shouldn’t have that chance any more. It was a pity, as I would have liked to battle for it and make it exciting right till the end. There is no doubt that Jan still would have good cards on his hand and that it would have been difficult to change that, but I would have liked to give the spectators a decent show,” said Lundgaard.
Fourth in the final race of the year was Outzen ahead of the Swede Jens Edman. Kristian Poulsen claimed sixth place ahead of STCC-man Johan Stureson, who made an one off apperance in the DTC-final.
James Thompson secured eigth place, and ninth in the total standings, ahead of Jesper Sylvest and Robert Schlünssen.
