Assaillit misses top ten spot

Fujitsu Racing’s Damian Assaillit has finished the final round of the Fujitsu Series at Oran Park in 12th place overall.

It also earned the Sunshine Coast racer 12th place in the final championship standings.

Assaillit improved from his 16th starting to position to take 12th place in the opening race, despite a badly flat-spotted front right tyre.

In the second race the heavens opened on the warm-up lap and officials decided to delay the start to allow all teams to change to wet weather tyres.

Assaillit charged in the wet, eyeing a top-five finish, but was hit in the rear and spun-off the circuit. He put in a storming drive to come back and finish 12th in the end.

“To have a top-five in the last race and top-10 overall slip through your fingers is disappointing,” said Assaillit.

“We didn’t get the best from the car in qualifying, but really came on strong in the races.

“I was pleased with how I drove in the wet, but I can’t say the same thing for others out there.

“Overall I had hoped for a little more this year in terms of results. From a personal point of view I feel that improved my driving and the opportunity to work with V8 star Jason Bright has been a fantastic.

“We will go about putting together a program for 2009 and aim to be a contender.”
