Schubert wins 24 Hours of Barcelona
Need For Speed Team Schubert dominated the 24 Hours of Barcelona, taking the win 21 laps ahead of the Brokernet Silver Sting of Bovi Motorsport with Equipe Verschuur securing the final spot on the podium with their Renault Mégane.
Schubert Motorsport’s driver quartet of Edward Sandström, Lars Stugemo, Michael Outzen and Peter Posavac led for almost the entire race distance of 669 laps in their GT3 specification BMW Z4 to win the endurance race held at the Circuit de Catalunya.
The Renault Mégane of Dutch team Equipe Verschuur looked set for a second place finish and victory in the SP2 class until a driveshaft failure late in the race dropped them back behind the Brokernet Silver Sting of the Hungarian Bovi Motorsport squad.
Bovi Motorsport claimed the class victory, completing 648 laps with its drivers Kalman Bodis, Istvan Racz, Wolfgang Kaufman and Jaap van Lagan, with Equipe Verschuur’s Tom & Raymond Coronel and Jeroen, Bas & Pieter Schothorsts’ Mégane in third.
“It is fantastic to add another win to our portfolio”, said Schubert Motorsport Team Manager Stefan Wendl.
“Our car ran like clockwork. The only incident we had was Michael Outzen having to drive through the gravel trap once during the night to avoid a collision with a car that had got stuck on the track right in front of him. After that, we had to clean up some gravel, but that was it.”
PCR Sport wrapped up the closely contested A3T class which was mostly made-up of SEAT Supercopa cars. The PCR car was driven by José de los Milagros, Alvaro Fontas and reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo, with Team Clairet Sport finishing just one lap behind them.
Move Racing by SUNRED finished ninth overall with former WTCC driver Jordi Gené onboard, whilst SUNRED’s second car with Pepe Oriola on the driving team retired after 398 laps.
