Thomas Biagi takes maiden victory for Mercedes
Thomas Biagi made it a double Mercedes win for the German manufacturer’s works team at Monza. The Italian came home ahead of team-mate Tonio Liuzzi, while Luigi Ferrara’s coupè version of the C63 made it to the podium again in third position.
Biagi had a great start from seventh and charged up to fourth in to the first corner, quickly making it to second place a couple of corner later. It took a few laps for the 2010 champion to find a way past Andrea Bacci’s Mercedes, including an aborted try which saw Biagi cut the chicane. Once in the lead, Biagi pulled up a big gap.
Meanwhile team-mate Liuzzi, who did not have the strong start as Biagi did, had to fight his way up through the field and by the time he was second his team mate was too far ahead to be caught.
As Ferrara finished in third, Gianni Morbidelli had to fight hard to make his way up through the field and finish fourth again as in the first race. Francesco Sini fought hard in his Chevrolet Camaro to try to keep the Audi behind, but in the end Morbidelli managed to find a way through and later engaged a spectacular fight with Andrea Bacci, who was defending fourth. Morbidelli made it past after a small touch on Bacci.
Sini finished in sixth ahead of Gian Maria Gabbiani, disguised as Diabolik in his Jaguar, with Giovanni Berton rounding off the top eight.
Both Porsches of Johan Kristoffersson and Massimiliano Fantini failed to start this race, just as the first. Kristoffersson’s rear axle broke in qualifying while Fantini’s gearbox broke on the formation lap of the first race. The team did not have enough spare parts to get the cars running for either of the races.
Next up for the Superstars Series is Brno, Czech Republic, on May 19th.
