Giovanni Berton dominates second race at Slovakiaring
Giovanni Berton took a dominant win in the second heat of the Superstars Series at Slovakiaring. The Team Dinamic BMW driver shared the podium with series leader Thomas Biagi in his Mercedes and Giovanni Morbidelli in his Audi Sport Italia RS5.
Berton took the lead during the first lap after a stunning start from sixth to second on the grid, and quickly got past Andrea Bacci’s Mercedes C63 AMG just before the Safety Car was brought out due to a spectacular engine failure of Liuzzi’s Mercedes, with the works C63 in flames after the technical problem.
At the restart Bacci tried to reclaim the lead, but that was short-lived as Berton was quick to get back into the lead and never leave it. The CAAL Racing driver slipped down the order as Gianni Morbidelli found himself in second before the last lap, during which Biagi pulled off a stunning last gasp move to claim second ahead of the RS5. Luigi Ferrara, who was second until the start of the last lap, appeared to suffer from technical problems and slipped down from second to fourth just ahead of Max Mugelli, who rounded up the top five.
Andrea Bacci was able to defend from a charging Francesco Sini in his Chevrolet Lumina, with Mauro Trentin, Diabolik and Roberto Benedetti’s Cadillac rounding up the top ten. Fabrizio Giovanardi’s Porsche Panamera surrendered with eight minutes to go while the double BTCC champion was running in fourth place.
Next up for the Superstars Series is Zolder in two weeks. Biagi will head into the weekend once again in the lead.
