Vitantonio Liuzzi leads Mercedes 1-2 at Slovakiaring
Vitantonio Liuzzi won the first race at Slovakiaring by being in control from lights to flag. The Italian was followed by Mercedes team-mate Thomas Biagi, with Giovanni Berton rounding off the podium.
At the start Liuzzi took the lead ahead of Ferrara, while Thomas Biagi was able to climb up to third ahead of Fabrizio Giovanardi. During the second lap, however, the Porsche driver was overtaken by Giovanni Berton’s BMW but managed to take the position back straight away. During the same lap Giovanni Morbidelli’s Audi RS5 overtook Mugelli’s BMW for sixth and the Team BMW Dinamic car of Giovanni Berton, but later retired due to a technical problem.
Francesco Sini, who started with the older Chevrolet Lumina fitted with some of the Camaro’s specs due to his accident yesterday, made a mistake and went off track. Later on, Ascani and Baccarelli made contact, but managed to rejoin the track again.
On lap 9 major drama would come, as Luigi Ferrara made a mistake and got stuck in the gravel from second position in the race.
Giovanardi, who had gone up to third after Ferrara’s retirement, was passed by Giovanni Berton. The last lap saw Mauro Trentin pass Bacci’s Mercedes for sixth, while Andrea Larini made a last lap mistake and promoted Roberto Benedetti to eighth and the race two pole position.
Biagi now leads the championship ahead of Biagi by fourteen points, with Berton thirty points down the leader.
Next up for the Superstars Series is the second race, which starts at 16.10 CET.
