Superstars Series closes down, citing financial issues

Maurizio Flammini, owner of SWR, which organises the Superstars Series, has announced today that the championship will cease to be run by the organisation in 2014 due to financial issues.

The announcement comes as a surprise, as Flammini had announced plans ahead of the 2014 season just a few days ago. That project is now not going to be carried out by SWR as it is.

“The years in which FG Group (from which SWR originated) has developed the Superstars project, together with other important international investors, were a charming experience”, said Flammini.

“Reaching a high positioning on an international level has given us great satisfaction, but the current situation of the market does not allow us to continue with the championship.”

After reminding that FG Group has created a very high profile series in the Superbike World Championship, Flammini claimed that the heritage left by the Superstars Series will hopefully allow it to start again soon. Flammini is looking for new investment to keep the championship going.

The way things stand, Gianni Morbidelli and Audi Sport Italia could have been the last champions in the series.
