Gabellini takes win at Mugello

During the DTM weekend at Mugello the SuperStars drover their second round in the support programme of the German Touring Car series. The victory went to Stefano Gabellini. The man from Cattolica, who drives for CAAL Racing in a BMW 550i, takes the lead in the championship with his win.

Gabellini startde the race from pole position, but had to give the lead to Davide Rigon the first three laps. After regaining the lead, Gabellini led in lap four and five, but had to let Giorgio Sanna by in lap 6. On lap 10 however, Gabellini retook the lead and kept that untill the end. He finished the race ahead of reigning champion Gianni Morbidelli. The former Formula 1 driver finished the race in second place, just ahead of his fellow Audi team mate Giorgio Sanna. However, Sanna received a penalty after the race for bumping the BMW M5 of Roberto Papini on the rear during a safety car period. Sanna dropped back to fifth place, giving third place to Jaguar driver Davide Rigon.

Gabellini now leads the Italian Championship with 40 points. Gianni Morbidelli is just one point behind in second place. Third place is for Kristian Ghedina with 22 points. In the International Championship the lead is for Gabellini as well, who has 42 points. Second is for Ghedina with 29 points. Davide Rigon has 17 points and is in third.

The next round will be held on May 17th and 18th at the Monza circuit, as a support race for the FIA GT round held there. The Zakspeed-Chrysler 300 SRT8 is expected to make his return there, as they failed to start at Mugello due to problems with the engine and gearbox. Maurer Motorsport is expected to make it’s debute their as well, as the engine from Dubai for the Chevrolet arrived to late to make it in time for the Mugello round.
