BMW labels Spa race as unfair

BMW Team Italy has criticized the performance equalization of the Superstars series after the race at Spa in Belgium. Best BMW driver, Stefano Gabellini, was close to 2.5 seconds from pole position in qualifying.

“Data and results of the weekend of Spa highlight clearly that the present balance of performance does not allow to race in a fair way cars equipped with engines of very different capacities and the BMW M3, with the latter being the most penalized due to its engine unit of ‘just’ 4 litres,” said Team Principal Roberto Ravaglia.

Two races remain of the Italian Superstars series and Ravaglia calls for an intervention from the technical bureau.

“Without an intervention of the Technical Bureau the values on the field in the season finale cannot change in Mugello and Vallelunga and this will make it impossible for our drivers to fight for the title,” said Ravaglia.

Best placed BMW driver in the championship is Thomas Biagi, who finished fourth in the second race at Spa, in third position, 36 points from the lead.

The Superstars series consist of larger touring cars with V8 engines spanning from 3.8 to 7.0 litres, with and without supercharging. The BMW M3 of BMW Team Italy uses a naturally aspirated 4-litre BMW V8 [S65B40] engine while current championship leader, Luigi Ferrara, uses a Mercedes C63 AMG with a naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8 [M156].

Superstars continues at Mugello in Italy on September the 25th.
