Cerqui takes pole as Bertolini struggles

Alberto Cerqui claimed his fourth pole position of the season. The Team BMW Italia driver went round the Mugello track in 1:54.211, three tenths faster than Maserati’s Alessandro Pier Guidi.

Thomas Biagi had been in second place for most of the session, but was overtaken by Pier Guidi in the final moments and will therefore start third, alongside fellow Team BMW Italia driver Stefano Gabellini.

Former World Touring Car Championship driver Luca Rangoni was fifth fastest, ahead of Superstars International Series leader Luigi Ferrara.

Gianni Morbidelli emerged as the quickest Audi Sport Italia driver, claiming seventh ahead of Francesco Sini, Johnny Herbert and Max Pigoli.

Championship contender Andrea Bertolini had a difficult session and only managed an eleventh place, before things got worse for the Maserati driver will of his times deleted for a timing infringement.

Alberto Cola’s comeback in the series was not an easy one, as the 2010 race winner only managed nineteenth.

The first race will start tomorrow at 11.40 (CET).
