Alberto Cerqui makes it a double at Mugello
Alberto Cerqui took another victory in the second Superstars heat at Mugello. Fellow BMW Italia driver Thomas Biagi came second, making it a BMW 1-2, ahead of Johnny Herbert.
Andrea Bertolini had an unlucky weekend; after retiring due to an accident in race one, the Maserati driver had to retire on the formation lap due to power steering issues.
At the start, Luca Rangoni took the lead ahead of Alessandro Pier Guidi, with Cerqui lying in third. The Mercedes and the Maserati made contact, leaving Rangoni out of the race and Pier Guidi down the order. Pier Guidi was later given a black flag for his move on the Roma Racing Team driver, leaving the way clear for Cerqui to take his second win of the day.
The Italian rookie won the race ahead of 2010 Champion Thomas Biagi and Johnny Herbert. Stefano Gabellini finished in fourth, followed by Max Pigoli and Francesco Sini. Luigi Ferrara came seventh, struggling with engine problems.
Cerqui moves up to second in the International Superstars Series, only 11 points behind Ferrara. Andrea Bertolini is third, tied up with Thomas Biagi, the pair being 20 points behind the leader. Max Pigoli is out of contention for the International title, being 45 points behind Ferrara.
Cerqui is leading the Italian Superstars Series, with a six point advantage over Ferrara and eight over Pigoli. Biagi is 15 points behind his team-mate. The final Superstars Series event takes place at Vallelunga on October, 9th.
