Gianni Morbidelli dominates Donington qualifying
Gianni Morbidelli dominated the Saturday action at Donington Park, claiming pole position after leading both free practice sessions. Audi locked out the front row with Thomas Schoeffler taking second, whilst Tom Onslow-Cole was third on his Superstars debut.
Morbidelli’s lap time was out of reach of anyone, the Italian being seven tenths quicker than his team-mate and some 1.5 seconds faster than newcomer Tom Onslow-Cole, who will start tomorrow’s race from third on the grid. Johnny Herbert made the second row fully British, claiming fourth for Maserati, who were the dominant force last year at Donington Park.
Max Pigoli and Vitantonio Liuzzi occupy the third row, the pair being almost two seconds slower than Morbidelli. Behind them will start the two BMWs of Thomas Biagi and Stefano Gabellini, though the former had been strong during free practice. Francesco Sini and Andrea Boffo rounded out the top ten, while Andrea Larini will start a disappointing eleventh after being more than two and a half seconds slower than the pole position.
