Biagi and Bettini lock out an all BMW front row

Thomas Biagi will start from pole position in tomorrow’s race at Mugello. The BMW driver will start alongside his team-mate and home hero Sandro Bettini, who ended the session just 42 thousandths shy of Biagi.

Camilo Zurcher took a surprising third for Romeo Ferraris at his first outing with the Mercedes C63 AMG. The Colombian will share the second row with Johnny Herbert, while Gianni Morbidelli and local hero Andrea Larini will start right behind them.

Championship leader Johan Kristofferson claimed the seventh spot on the grid, ahead of Stegano Gabellini. A stunning performance from Paolo Meloni put the driver from San Marino in ninth with the ageing BMW M3 E90, just ahead of former Grand Prix driver Vitantonio Liuzzi, who rounds up the top ten.

Max Pigoli will start from eleventh, the Jaguar XF-R appearing not to be competitive enough on the Tuscan track. Andrea Boffo, who had shown an impressive pace in his first few races with Mercedes, has now joined Ferlito Motors, but the young rookie qualified in 18th, almost 2.5 seconds off the pace.

Kristoffersson led the session after passing Biagi around twelve minutes into the session. Herbert and Zurcher also enjoyed the provisional pole as the 2010 Superstars Champion had his best time cancelled for going beyond track limits. However, Biagi managed to jump into the lead with two minutes to go, while his team-mate Bettini almost took that away under the chequered flag.

The first race will start tomorrow at 11.15 (CET).
