Pergusa back to international racing with Superstars

The legendary Pergusa track is back on an international calendar this year. Sources say that the track, located in Sicily and recently brought back to racing by a Campionato Italiano Turismo Endurance event, will host the seventh round of the International Superstars Series.

Pergusa will replace the Portimão round, which was recently postponed until the 2013 season.

The presence of the Sicilian track in motorsport ended in 2004, when the track lost its license. The famous Variante Pineta (also known as Variante Schumacher, named after the seven-time Formula One World Champion who designed the chicane to reduce the speeds reached on the fast track), the last corner and all of the kerbs have undergone an extended amount of work to fully update the circuit to the new international standards.

Famous for its high-speed layout and built around a lake, Pergusa last featured on a high profile touring car series in 2003, when it hosted the third round of the FIA European Touring Car Championship, the forerunner of the current WTCC.

The Superstars event is scheduled for September 16th.
