Gianni Morbidelli takes first pole of the year at Zolder

Gianni Morbidelli took his first pole position of the year for Audi Sport Italia. The Italian was some four tenths quicker than Vitantonio Liuzzi’s Romeo Ferraris Mercedes, who will share the front row.

Local driver Renaud Kuppens put his Scuderia Giudici-prepared BMW M3 E92 in third, just six thousandths ahead of Luigi Ferrara’s Roma Racing Mercedes. The Italian had led the session for twenty minutes, but was not able to improve his lap time, with Liuzzi’s improving to take provisional pole with ten minutes to go.

Max Mugelli had a strong session, putting his Team Dinamic BMW in fifth ahead of the Caal Racing Mercedes of Raffaele Giammaria, who returns to the Superstars Series after his successful weekend at Pergusa last year.

Giovanni Berton was seventh in the second of Team Dinamic’s BMWs ahead of Nicola Larini, who was eighth fastest in his first outing with the Porsche Panamera S of Petri Corse.

Championship leader Thomas Biagi finished the session in ninth in his Romeo Ferraris Mercedes ahead of Francesco Sini’s Chevrolet Camaro, with the second Petri Corse Porsche of Fabrizio Giovanardi just under a tenth behind in eleventh.

Local star Laurens Vanthoor, who is also competing in the GT race in an Audi R8, was not able to take his RS 5 out on track. The Belgian had been impressive in the two free practice sessions, leading the first one and finishing in second in the last free practice, and will therefore start from the back of the grid.

The first race will start at 12:00 CET.
