Luigi Ferrara takes surprise pole position in Portimão
Luigi Ferrara took a surprise pole position in Portimão. The Italian put his Mercedes C63 AMG Coupé on top with a late improvement, demoting Gianni Morbidelli’s Audi RS 5 to second.
The pair will be followed on the grid by the Mercedes of Vitantonio Liuzzi, who had dominated the weekend so far but failed to improve on his Free Practice 2 lap time and will share the second row with Romeo Ferraris team-mate Thomas Biagi.
Max Mugelli clocked the fifth laptime, emerging as the fastest BMW driver. The Italian will start alongside Fabrizio Giovanardi, who had impressed in the second free practice session by setting the fourth lap time, but his Porsche Panamera S was five tenths slower in qualifying.
Giovanni Berton will start from seventh in his Team BMW Dinamic M3 E92. The multiple race winner will share the fourth row with Francesco Sini with his Chevrolet Camaro. Mauro Trentin will line up in ninth alongside a surprising Jonathan Giacon. The rookie, coming from a one-make series, managed to put his Audi RS 4 prepared by Team Adria Raceway in tenth.
The first race is scheduled to start at 11.00 WET.
