Ferrara heads Mercedes 1-2-3-4 as Morbidelli struggles

Luigi Ferrara took his third pole position in a row at Imola in Italy. The Mercedes driver will start ahead of team mates Vitantonio Liuzzi and Thomas Biagi, with Andrea Bacci completing the dominant 1-2-3-4 for the German cars.

Max Mugelli will be the best of the rest on the grid in his BMW M3 as the Tuscany-based driver was just a handful of tenths quicker than Francesco Sini’s Chevrolet Camaro. Giovanni Berton’s BMW took seventh ahead of joint championship leader and Audi Sport Italia driver Gianni Morbidelli, qualifying his Audi RS5 ahead of team-mate Davide Di Benedetto and Mauro Trentin.

Liuzzi led the opening stages of the session, with the former F1 driver looking comfortably able to stick to his pole position. Towards the end of the session, as Liuzzi was fighting against team-mate Thomas Biagi and Ferrara, the Roma Racing Team driver pulled out a stunning performance to claim pole ahead of the sedan versions of his car.

The first race starts at 12.50 CET tomorrow.
