Mercedes excluded from Donington, loses teams’ title

Works Mercedes team Romeo Ferraris has lost the 2013 teams’ championship as the FIA court ruled that the two C63 AMGs of Thomas Biagi and Vitantonio Liuzzi did not comply with the technical regulations at Donington Park last season.

Audi Sport Italia had lodged a protest after the race, claiming that the bonnet and the flat floor of the two C63s were not legal. Despite Romeo Ferraris claiming there was no performance advantage, it has been ruled that the cars were fitted with illegal parts.

As per the Superstars Series sporting rules, Romeo Ferraris has been excluded from the results of the race, with Thomas Biagi and Vitantonio Liuzzi all losing 20 points in the championship, promoting Audi Sport Italia to teams’ champions.

Despite the penalty, nothing changes in the Drivers’ championship, as Giovanni Berton had already taken the runner-up spot with a very positive final weekend at Vallelunga in his BMW M3.

The FIA’s decision means Audi took all the Superstars titles in 2013 except the Star Drivers’, with the only eligible Audi driver, Ferdinando Geri, only taking part in the first three events of the season.
